I Had Too Many Friends So I Went Vegan

How to Be Vegan and Keep Your Friends

One of the hardest parts of going vegan is not the food: it is the friendships. Many new vegans quickly notice that their social circle starts to change. Suddenly, some friends do not want to hang out as much, jokes fly around at your expense, and certain dinner invitations stop coming.

This can feel isolating. But here is the truth: you can be vegan and still keep your friends. It just takes a little understanding, patience, and sometimes a sense of humor.

Why Going Vegan Can Affect Friendships

When I first made the switch, I noticed how different my social life felt. Eating together is how many of us bond, and when you no longer order the same burger, pizza, or barbecue plate, some people feel awkward.

Others take your vegan choice as a judgment on theirs. Even if you never criticize anyone, some friends project their own discomfort onto you. This is why many people talk about losing friends at the start of their vegan journey.

But here is the good news: you can keep your friends and even grow stronger bonds if you approach it the right way. And if some friendships fade: that is okay too. Not everyone will understand or even want to: sometimes you just need to let go and focus on those who truly support you.

Tips for Keeping Vegan Friends and Non-Vegan Friends

If you are worried about being vegan and losing your friends, here are practical and sometimes funny ways to keep those bonds alive:

  1. Suggest inclusive restaurants: Pick places with vegan options alongside non-vegan ones. That way nobody feels like they are stuck with “just salad” while you eat something delicious.

  2. Host vegan gatherings without the label: Cook up a full vegan spread for a dinner or party. You do not need to announce it: just let people enjoy it. Bonus points when they only realize halfway through that they have been happily eating plants all night.

  3. Stay social with non-vegan friends: Do not disappear from your old hangouts. Go to coffee shops, concerts, or even the occasional sports bar. You can sip your oat latte proudly next to their chicken wings. Friendship is not cancelled just because the menu looks different.

  4. Use humor to disarm tension: If someone cracks the classic “but… bacon” joke, laugh it off with something witty like “yep, I used to love bacon too, but my conscience stopped loving me back.” Humor keeps conversations light and shows you are not the “angry vegan” stereotype.

  5. Show that you value them: Tell your friends you appreciate them even if they are not vegan. Most of us were not born vegan: remembering where you started makes it easier to connect without judgment.

  6. Balance old and new connections: Make space for vegan friends who share your lifestyle, but do not feel pressured to abandon your old circle. Think of it like a social buffet: a little bit of everything keeps life interesting.

  7. Keep activities flexible: Suggest outings that do not revolve around food. Hiking, movie nights, or board games are safe ground: nobody has to argue over cheese.

  8. Accept that not everyone will get it: Some friends may judge, tease, or even drift away. And that is okay. True vegan friends and supportive non-vegan friends will stick by you. Sometimes losing a few makes space for the right ones to come in.

The Real Outcome of Going Vegan

Going vegan may test some friendships, but it also helps reveal which ones are genuine. Over time, many of your non-vegan friends will see that your values do not erase who you are. And you will meet new vegan friends who truly understand your journey.

Remember: you do not have to be serious all the time. A sense of humor and kindness go a long way in showing people that being vegan is not only about compassion for animals, but also about living joyfully with others.
